Fried Green TomatoesFRIED GREEN TOMATO BATTER
This batter mix was developed after years of serving fried green tomatoes at the WhistleStop Cafe. We received so many compliments and people were always asking for the recipe. Now you can make authentic fried green tomatoes at home…and a lot of other things.

You can use the batter on green tomatoes, onions, squash, zucchini, eggplant, mushrooms, green beans, shrimp and more. Try frying pickles for a fun twist. For thinner batter add slightly more water (to taste) and for thicker batter use less water. Folks from all over have called with their own variation such as adding grated parmesan or their favorite spice.

The following are some good ways to use this batter and fried green tomatoes.

*Fried Dill Pickles
Drain the juice off of sliced pickles and pat dry. Batter according to directions and cook in a skillet with 1-2 inches of hot grease. Place on paper towels to remove excess fat.

*Green Tomatoes with Feta Cheese
Select small firm green tomatoes. Prepare according to directions. After cooking, place on a paper towel to drain excess fat. Sprinkle each (while hot) with crumbled feta cheese. Serve warm.

*Green Tomato Parmesan
Substitute eggplant with fried green tomatoes in your favorite parmesan recipe.

*Bacon Lettuce and Green Tomatoes
Make a BLT using Fried Green Tomatoes. We like it with lightly toasted sourdough bread.

*Tomatoes and Gravy
Serve with your favorite sawmill gravy. If you need a good recipe for sawmill gravy, here’s one of ours. . . . Blend 1½ cup milk, 1 cup water & ½ cup self rising flour until smooth. Pour 1/4 cup bacon or sausage drippings into 8" to 10" skillet. Heat pan drippings, then stir in blended mixture stirring until thick. Add salt and pepper to taste.

*Corn Dogs
Place a wooden skewer in the center of the hotdog, running it through more than half way. Using the Fried Green Tomato batter, coat each hot dog generously with a thicker batter. Fry until golden brown. Warning: holding the stick while frying may cause splatters onto your hand.

*Appetizers
Slice green tomatoes per directions, then cut into quarters, batter and fry. Serve with toothpicks as an appetizer, also top with small slice of ham and cheese.

*Bacon ‘Maters
Lay out fried green tomatoes on cookie sheet, put a half slice of cooked bacon on top, add thin slice of cheese. Broil just long enough to melt Cheese.

*Cheesy Green Tomatoes
Spread Fried Green Tomatoes on cookie sheet, shred your favorite cheese on top of tomatoes, broil just long enough to melt cheese. (We like sharp cheddar, mozzarella, and pepper jack!)

*Italian Tomatoes
Marinate sliced Green Tomatoes in your favorite Italian Salad dressing for approx. 2 hours, then batter and fry.

*Green Tomato Croutons
Slice Green Tomatoes into quarters. Fry according to directions. When cooling sprinkle with Garlic salt. Use on a salad as crunchy croutons.

*Sweet Green Tomatoes
Fry green tomatoes according to directions. While still warm sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve for dessert.

*Iced Green Tomatoes
Mix 1/2 cup of Brown Sugar with 1/4 cup cream (half & half ) Stir well, cover and heat in microwave safe dish for 40 - 50 seconds, remove and stir again. Lightly pour with spoon over Fried Green Tomatoes.
